Scaddan Primary School

Newsletter Week 4, Term 2 2023

Principals Welcome Week 4, Term 2 2023

Dear Parents, Carers, Students, Staff and Community,

I hope all our beautiful mothers and grandmothers had a lovely relaxing day on Sunday. The ECE students loved having their mums join them last Thursday for a fun morning of activities.

We are very excited to be fully staffed this term and Mr Harvey is settling into Scaddan quickly with the help of his amazing students.

The school is looking for members of the community that would like to put their name down as relief support staff - Cleaner, Gardener, Education Assistant & Office staff.  If you would like to register your interest, please phone the office on 90755100 or email the school at scadddan.ps@education.wa.edu.au and we can let you know what is required. You will need to obtain a Working with Children Card and a Department of Education Police Screening, Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check. The school will offer any training and/or courses that may be required.

Mrs Berry will be taking Long Service Leave next term for 4 weeks. Mrs Suttar who is Manager of Corporate Services at Salmon Gums Primary School will be backfilling Mrs Berry for 2 days a week in the office. We are still requiring an office assistant for 2 days per week. Please contact Mrs Berry if you are interested. There will also be future days available as relief.

Miss Mas will be taking leave from Term 3 as our gardener and cleaner. We are very jealous that she will be travelling overseas. Mrs Clark will be replacing Miss Mas as our gardener for 6 months. We are excited to have her back in our Scaddan community. We still require a cleaner. Please contact the school if you are interested. Training and handover will be provided this term.

We have had several students test positive to COVID over the last 2 weeks.

If you require any Rapid Antigen Tests, we will have them available after the assembly on Thursday for collection. WA Health Department recommendations are:

  • stay home if you are unwell
  • practise good hygiene
  • practise physical distancing and staying 1.5 metres away from others
  • wear a mask
  • get tested and if you are positive, it is recommended you stay home for 5 days.

We look forward to seeing everyone at Mrs Evan’s K-2 Assembly on Thursday at 2pm in the undercover area.

Kind regards,

Lynley Neill
Principal

We had a wonderful time celebrating Mothers Day on Thursday 11th May. We decorated biscuits, painted portraits and made some bath bombs, that didn't quite work the way we planned. It was a lovely morning.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

National Simultaneous Storytime will be held on Wednesday 24 May at 11:00am. NSS is an important annual campaign by the Australian Library and Information Association that aims to encourage young children to read and enjoy books as well as teach the value of literacy across the country. This year’s book is Rebecca Young's The Speedy Sloth. This wonderful, rhyming story tells the tale of a special sloth who breaks the slow-sloth mould to become a super speedy racer!

LILEY PROJECT

Mrs Evans will be attending a workshop with other Mallee Early Childhood teachers on Monday 29 May 2023. The session will extend the teachers knowledge of intentional teaching, particularly when exploring play-based learning pedagogy. CANBERRA CAMP

Mrs Vooght-Simspon has been very busy finalising all Mallee School’s paperwork. Please check the latest information sent home this week. The itinerary looks action packed. The information includes an equipment/clothing list. Please ring the school if you have any questions.

In addition to the P&C support, the camp has also been heavily subsidised by the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) with each student receiving $1530.

Attendance Matters

As a school, we are required to work towards improving the attendance of our students.

ATTENDANCE

Congratulations to the following students who have achieved 100% attendance so far this term:

Billie, Hunter and Pippa

Congratulations to the following students who have achieved at or above our school target of 93% attendance so far this term:

Ryder, Sailor and Layla.

At Scaddan Primary School, our goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to achieve their potential.

Scaddan Primary School will maintain consistently high levels of student attendance with a target of 93% or above. The Department of Education classifies any student below 90% as an attendance risk.

We know that everyday at school contributes to learning, which leads to better engagement and higher academic achievement. This sets students up for life and creates better social and economic outcomes for Western Australian families sand communities.

The School Education Act 1999 requires children of compulsory school age to attend school. When a child is unable to attend, legislation requires that Parents and Carers provide written notification providing a reasonable cause for the absence of the child.

We encourage you to notify the school of any absence via email or by replying to the school messaging system.

Djeran (April - May)

The Nyungar Season ‘Djeran' is represented by the colour green as it is the time of the year where the cooler weather begins.

Djeran season sees a break in the really hot weather. A key indicator of the change of season is the cool nights that bring a dewy presence in the early mornings.

The winds will also change, especially in their intensity, with light breezes generally swinging from southerly directions.  Many flying ants can be seen cruising around in the light winds.

Djeran is a time of red flowers, especially from the red flowering gum (Corymbiaficifolia).

Banksias start to display their flowers, ensuring that there are nectar food sources for the many small mammals and birds that rely upon them.

Traditionally, foods at this time of year included the zamia seeds that had been collected and stored for treatment during the previous season.

The root bulbs of the yanget (Bullrushes), fresh water fish, frogs and turtles were also common foods.

As the season progresses, the nights will become cooler and damp. The onset of cool and rainy days meant that traditional mia mias (houses or shelters) were repaired and updated to make sure they were waterproofed and facing in the right direction in readiness for the deep wintery months to come.

Communication

To ensure that communication is clear, timely and responsive to the needs of everyone we have the following in place:

All official communication is via the school email scaddan.ps@education.wa.edu.au. This email address is monitored daily and is received by the Manager Corporate Services, Mrs Tracey Berry.

In the event that the school needs to contact all families at the same time, a text message will be sent from the school MGMOutReach+ system or school mobile number 0427 756 055.

This system will also be used for emergencies and monitoring attendance. It is a legal requirement that the school is notified of any student absence.

The school newsletter will be sent out in Week 4 and Week 8 of each Term and will contain key information and outline term events. It will be emailed out and uploaded to the school website https://www.scaddanps.wa.edu.au

SeeSaw will be used by class teachers to share learning and important information and reminders for their class. Teachers may at times post messages and reminders of requirements for their classes during the day, however this is not to be used for ongoing communication throughout the day as teachers are unable to monitor this in a consistent manner.

Student diaries have been provided for your child. Please keep them in your child's bag. The diaries and student folders are checked every day by the classroom teacher. Parents/carers to write in any changes in travel arrangements for the day. This information is then written on the bus whiteboard on the verandah indicating who will pick up the child and at what time.

I can be contacted via email lynley.neill@education.wa.edu.au or school mobile 0427 756 055 or by phoning the school office on 90755100.

Updat-ed school app

Our school has implemented a phone app called Updat-ed that will make connecting with you so much more convenient.

To download the app just visit the App Store for iPhones or Google Play for Android’s. Search for Updat-ed and from the menu select our school. We’ll receive your registration request and will need to approve you before your app is up and running.

So what will the app do?

The app’s great for sending out alerts and reminders with one of its best features being the ability to save events directly into your phone’s calendar.

We hope you enjoy being Updat-ed.
