Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Community Members,
World Teacher’s Day
Last Friday was World Teacher’s Day. I want to acknowledge and thank our amazing teachers for all the wonderful learning opportunities that they provide for our students. You are valued. The students enjoyed reflecting and sharing their beautiful messages with their teachers. Thank you to Miss Mas for sharing your gorgeous roses and succulents.
Excursion and Incursions
Over the past fortnight the students have been very busy. Our senior students participated in ‘Armed for Life’, PP – Year 5 students attended Wongutha CAPS NAIDOC celebrations and K-Year 5 engaged in a Constable Care puppet show and theatre workshop. The ECE students enjoyed a Teddy Bear’s Picnic. The kindergarten students also attended an extra day this week in preparation for their transition into full time school next year. I am very proud of the students conduct over the events and their values displayed. We have had many opportunities to network socially with our Mallee Schools.
Values Reward
The students have displayed the Scaddan Primary School Value of Pride consistently so now the tube is full in the front office. The students have earnt a games afternoon next Thursday 11th November. Students can bring in a game to share with their friends.
Student Councillor Selection Process for 2022
Next week the Senior Room students have been provided with the opportunity of nominating themselves for Student Forum in 2022. This is the first part of a process. We will then allow time for the nominated students to develop a speech to deliver to the whole school. A mini assembly will take place on Tuesday 16th November, 2021 @ 1:40pm. Parents and Carers are invited to attend. The students will vote directly after those speeches. The 2022 Student Forum will be announced at the End of Year Concert and Award Presentations on Monday 13th December.
I wish all of our senior students the very best within this selection process.
New phone system
We have had new phones installed today and we will be changing over to a new number. The new number is 08 90755100. Our current phone number will still work for a period of time after that you will be redirected to the new number.
Snake Drill
This week we had a snake drill during outside play time. As the weather is heating up, the drill is a great reminder and prepares students and staff for this event.
Book Fair
I am looking forward to seeing everyone in their book fair costume next Monday.
Kind regards,
Lynely Neill
Wongutha CAPS Excursion
Thank you to Wongutha CAPS for inviting us to their NAIDOC celebrations. We had a huge day of cultural learning. The students learnt about the bush tucker in season, enjoyed the bush food tasting, live band, storytelling, art and having their face painted.
ECE Teddy Bear’s Picnic
Due to wet weather last week, the ECE students had their Teddy Bear’s Picnic at school. Salmon Gums Primary School still attended and the students all enjoyed their day.
Yesterday our K-Year 3 students engaged in “FUN SCARY” A Protective Behaviours Puppet Theatre Performance presented by Constable Care.
Timmy, Teagan and Sarge the Dog were at the park enjoying a beautiful afternoon. They got butterflies in their tummies as they zoomed down the big slide and their hearts pounded with excitement playing chasey. They realised that it can be pretty fun to feel a little scared, but not always. There’s a difference between fun-scary and bad-scary. Timmy and Teagan learnt that there is always a safe person to talk to about the bad-scary stuff. The fun play helped the students to identify feelings, increase emotional literacy and supported them in identifying safe adults to talk to.
Key Concepts for this performance: • There is a difference between keeping ‘safe’ and ‘unsafe’ secrets • Our bodies give us warning signs when we are feeling unsafe. • Tell a trusted adult if you ever feel the ‘bad’ sort of scared or you don’t feel safe. • Tell an adult again if they don’t listen to you the first time • Sometimes you might need to move to the next trusted adult on your ‘trusted hand network’.
Our Year 2-5 students engaged in ‘Frenemies’ interactive session. It explored bullying and pro-social skills amongst young people.
Key concepts for this performance • “Bullying is a repeated behaviour; that may be physical, verbal and/or psychological; where there is intent to cause fear, distress, or harm to another; that is conducted by a more powerful individual or group; against a less powerful individual or group of individuals who are unable to stop this from happening.” (Olweus 1996) • Bullying is a whole school issue and therefore can only be solved through a whole school approach. The first step is a cultural shift amongst the students. • Bullying is complex and instantaneous solutions don’t exist – only the students have the power to make real, tangible change. • Resolving the social issue of bullying is multifaceted. Developing coping strategies for victims, deconstructing actions and intentions of perpetrators and empowering bystanders are all essential elements needed to make change. • Bullying has a myriad of consequences that have lifelong effects. • On average one in four high school students are bullied at school ‘every few weeks’ or more often. • Empathy, emotional literacy, problem solving, communication and support networks are our essential values in approaching cultural change towards bullying.
For being a kind and respectful friend to our kindy guests from Salmon Gums Primary School.
Book Fair
Next Monday is Book Fair. Students will have the opportunity to look at the display of book on Friday 5th November. Students and families can purchase the books on Monday 8th November. Preferred payment is by credit card. There will be limited change available.
Students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character. There will be a parade at 9:30am. Kindergarten students will also be attending as their second make up day.
Student Forum 2022
Next Tuesday the Senior Room students can self-nominate for 2022 Student Forum. They will prepare a speech and deliver it on Tuesday 16th November @ 1:40pm. Families are invited to the mini assembly. Voting will take place after the speeches.
Remembrance Day
Next Thursday we will hold a minutes' silence at 11am near the flagpole. Students will be making poppies for the event.

ATTENDANCE
Congratulations to the following students who have achieved 100% attendance so far this term:
Billie, Hunter and Pippa
Congratulations to the following students who have achieved at or above our school target of 93% attendance so far this term:
Ryder, Sailor and Layla.
At Scaddan Primary School, our goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to achieve their potential.
Scaddan Primary School will maintain consistently high levels of student attendance with a target of 93% or above. The Department of Education classifies any student below 90% as an attendance risk.
We know that everyday at school contributes to learning, which leads to better engagement and higher academic achievement. This sets students up for life and creates better social and economic outcomes for Western Australian families sand communities.
The School Education Act 1999 requires children of compulsory school age to attend school. When a child is unable to attend, legislation requires that Parents and Carers provide written notification providing a reasonable cause for the absence of the child.
We encourage you to notify the school of any absence via email or by replying to the school messaging system.
To download the app just visit the App Store for iPhones or Google Play for Android’s. Search for Updat-ed and from the menu select our school. We’ll receive your registration request and will need to approve you before your app is up and running.
So what will the app do?
The app’s great for sending out alerts and reminders with one of its best features being the ability to save events directly into your phone’s calendar.
We hope you enjoy being Updat-ed.
