Scaddan Primary School

Newsletter Week 8, Term 3 2022

Principal Welcome Week 8, Term 3 2022

Dear parents, carers, students and community members,

What an action-packed Term 3! I’ve hit the ground running and am happy to be back after Long Service Leave. I hope you are all getting your finishing rains.

I would like to welcome our new family to Scaddan Primary School. Rhylee and Sharnay have settled in quickly and adapted to our routines. They are a valued addition to our school community.

I would like to highlight the great work that Mrs Mandy Bouckaert did in my absence. I know that the staff were very appreciative of Mandy’s leadership especially the first week of the term where the school was heavily impacted with COVID. Mandy’s leadership in the Mallee was exceptional, driving our Reconciliation Action Plan and coordinating Senior Mallee Camp.

Although we were significantly impacted by COVID we are still moving forward and are embracing every opportunity to engage in important leaning opportunities. Some of our highlights this term include the Mallee Schools' NAIDOC On Country excursion, hosting Interschool Athletics Carnival, Bookfair, K-2 Teddy Bears Picnic & Edward the Emu excursion. We also had the Biodiversity excursion at the Cannery Arts, ECE Father’s Day morning, Fishy Features incursion and Numero competition.

Next week we have Student Leaders Day and Senior Room assembly. We are looking forward to Swim Week in Week 10. What a huge term!

Term 3 always challenges our Attendance due to illness and family holidays. We are currently reviewing our Attendance plan to ensure absences are followed up and school attendance is valued. We know that every day at school contributes to learning, which leads to better engagement and higher academic achievement. Congratulations to Ava, George and Indi-Lee who are above our school target of 93% attendance this term.

Congratulations to Marley for 100% attendance. You will receive a book prize at the Senior Assembly next week.

The Year 3 and 5 students have received their NAPLAN reports this week. Our students performed well. It was the first time the Year 5 students were required to type their Writing test and it was fantastic to see them embrace this opportunity. Staff will have the opportunity to anaylse the student data at our next School Development Day to inform our planning, target setting and priorities going forward into 2023.

NAPLAN will be held in Term 1 Week 7 next year.

I would like to thank Mrs Ros Tyrrell and the P&C for the Healthways grant of $5000 we received. Mrs Mandy Bouckaert has been busy working with local Aboriginal artist Mrs Candice Smith, planning and designing a whole school mural project around the 6 Nyungar seasons.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Senior Room assembly on Thursday.

Kind regards,

Lynley Neill
Principal

Staff Development Day

On the Term 3 School Development Day our staff engaged in the social and emotional program, MindUP with Shannon Bowen. If you are interested in finding out more about the MindUP for School program and the skills your children are learning, please click on the link below. My Mindful Brain explains how parts of the brain are connected to the ways we think, feel and behave. Understanding the brain helps us learn how to manage our emotions, improve learning and live happier lives.

Junior Mallee Teacher Days

In week 5, the Junior Mallee teachers met to moderate our students' maths samples and we received professional learning in mental mathematics strategies. This year we have committed to the LILEY project run by Amy Nelson, Principal at Munglinup Primary School. This project offers exciting opportunities to foster leadership and best practice in our early years.

Senior Mallee Teachers’ Day

In Week 5, the Senior Room teachers from the five Mallee schools met for a Senior Mallee Network meeting. At the meeting, the teachers moderated the students’ writing samples to ensure that our judgements about their achievement in Writing are consistent and comparable. We also planned our next STEM morning which will have something to do with eggs… You will have to wait until next Friday to find out exactly what we are doing! Finally, the teachers undertook a workshop with Mr Dahmen Higgs about Ed Companion – an online platform which provides real time insights into our students’ progress and performance in literacy and numeracy. It was a really productive day.

We would like to thank our Regional Director, Mrs Leila Bothams for supporting this valuable networking opportunity through funding relief.

ECE Father’s Day

Miss Hatton would like to kindly thank Woolworths for their donation for our K/PP Father’s Day morning tea. We had so much fun making mini pizzas with our Dads.

Thank you to our Kindy and Pre-Primary fathers for coming in Tuesday morning. We all loved having you in our class and spoiling you for Father’s Day.

Whole School Reward

Students were rewarded for demonstrating their School Values with a movie and popcorn afternoon. The students achieved this reward by filling 2 more sections on the Respect and Nurturing Values tubes. The Excellence tube has filled to the next section and the Pride is not far behind. Keep working hard for your next reward.

Fishy Features Incursion

As part of our Biological sciences program this term, students engaged in a  Fisheries education incursion called Fishy Features. Students examined fish species found in the local Esperance area and exploring their adaptations.

Interschool Athletics Carnival

In Week 7, Scaddan Primary School hosted the Interschool Athletics Carnival. There were four teams competing on the day: Mallee North (Scaddan and Salmon Gums), Mallee West (Munglinup and Cascade), Condingup and Esperance Christian School. It was a tight contest all day with Condingup just finishing ahead of Mallee North to win overall. Mallee North won the handicap shield. It was a great day with students from all four teams doing their personal best and showing great sportsmanship. Thank you to our amazing P&C for organising the morning tea and to all our fabulous volunteers who took on different roles throughout the day. We are already looking forward to next year’s Interschool Athletics Carnival which will be hosted by Esperance Christian School. Go Mallee North!

Congratulations to the following Scaddan Primary School students:
Runner-Up Senior Boy: Charlie V
Intermediate Champion Girl: Indi-Lee
Junior Champion Girl: Aleisha
Runner-Up Junior Boy: George

Messy Play Day

Senior Mallee Camp 2022

At the end of last term, the Year 5/6 students from the five Mallee schools went to Albany for the Senior Mallee Camp. It was a fantastic week with students undertaking a range of different activities including geocaching and archery. They even got to visit Albany’s famous whaling station and the National ANZAC Centre. A big thank you to Mr Suttar and Miss Moody who looked after the students and made sure everything ran smoothly. Below are some of the highlights of the camp according to our Year 5/6 students.

My favourite activity on camp was shelter building. We split off into groups of four and had to build cubbies out of natural things. After we built them, the organiser told us to go in our cubby and then he poured water onto it to see if it was waterproof. It was awesome! – Charlie

My favourite activity on camp was Laserscape. We got to wear camouflage which was cool. After we got dressed up, we all went into our teams to start the game. Everyone was in stealth mode trying to get people from the other team. It was loads of fun! – Lucas

At camp, I really enjoyed the geocaching. I liked going through the bush and up some big hills while trying to solve some riddles. My group solved the first riddle the fastest! – Caitlyn

Scaddan Primary School would like to thank Mr Michael Harding and Mrs Jenny Pryce for donating the use of their school bus for our Senior Mallee Camp. We are grateful for your generosity. Your support made the trip more affordable for our families. Thank you.

Scaddan Primary School would like to thank Mr and Mrs Harris from South East Petroleum for their generous donation of fuel for the bus to Camp Quaranup in Albany. Thank you so much for supporting our Senior Mallee camp and making the trip more affordable for our families. It is much appreciated.

Scaddan Primary School would like to thank IGO for their very generous donation of $5000. The funding was appreciated by all Mallee School’s which significantly lowered the overall cost of the Senior Mallee Camp to Camp Quaranaup in Albany. The students had an action-packed week full of fun and friendship. Thank you, IGO!

Djilba (August – September)

The Noongar Season ‘Djilba' is represented by the colour pink as it symbolises growth of wildflowers and plants.

We are now heading into Djilba (jill-ba) for the months of August and September, known as first spring.

This is the start of the massive flowering explosion that happens, beginning with the yellow flowering plants such as the acacias.

Djilba is a transitional time of the year, with some very cold and clear days combining with warmer, rainy and windy days mixing with the occasional sunny day or two.

Traditionally, the main food sources included many of the land-based grazing animals including the yongar (kangaroo), the waitj (emu) and the koomal (possum).

As the days start to warm up, we start to see and hear the first of the newborns with their proud parents out and about providing them with food, guiding them through foraging tasks and protecting their family units from much bigger animals, including people!

The woodland birds are still nest bound, hence the swooping protective behaviour of the koolbardi (magpie), djidi djidi (willy wag tails) and chuck-a-luck (wattle birds).

It’s also a great time to spot Mamang (whales) with their calves in the Wadarn (ocean) along our coastline.

As the season progresses and the temperatures continue to rise, the flower stalks of the balgas (Grass Trees) emerge in preparation for the coming Kambarang season.

Attendance Matters

As a school, we are required to work towards improving the attendance of our students.

ATTENDANCE

Congratulations to the following students who have achieved 100% attendance so far this term:

Billie, Hunter and Pippa

Congratulations to the following students who have achieved at or above our school target of 93% attendance so far this term:

Ryder, Sailor and Layla.

At Scaddan Primary School, our goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to achieve their potential.

Scaddan Primary School will maintain consistently high levels of student attendance with a target of 93% or above. The Department of Education classifies any student below 90% as an attendance risk.

We know that everyday at school contributes to learning, which leads to better engagement and higher academic achievement. This sets students up for life and creates better social and economic outcomes for Western Australian families sand communities.

The School Education Act 1999 requires children of compulsory school age to attend school. When a child is unable to attend, legislation requires that Parents and Carers provide written notification providing a reasonable cause for the absence of the child.

We encourage you to notify the school of any absence via email or by replying to the school messaging system.

Updat-ed school app

Our school has implemented a phone app called Updat-ed that will make connecting with you so much more convenient.

To download the app just visit the App Store for iPhones or Google Play for Android’s. Search for Updat-ed and from the menu select our school. We’ll receive your registration request and will need to approve you before your app is up and running.

So what will the app do?

The app’s great for sending out alerts and reminders with one of its best features being the ability to save events directly into your phone’s calendar.

We hope you enjoy being Updat-ed.
