Newsletter Week 4, Term 1 2023

Principals Welcome Week 4, Term 1 2023

Dear Parents, Carers, Staff, Students and Community,

The 2023 school year was always going to be a challenging start given the difficulty of obtaining a Senior Room teacher. A process to employ a Year 3-6 teacher is underway, with the contract commencing in Term 2. The students have been enjoying the quality of relief teachers, Mrs Bond, Mrs Gow, Mrs Wooldridge and Miss Clark delivering the teaching learning program provided by our very dedicated Curriculum Support Teacher, Mrs Mandy Bouckaert. We welcome Mrs Alysha Castelli to our school in Week 7. Mrs Castelli will be teaching in the Senior Room Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week for the rest of the term.

School Chaplain, Mr Lindsay Ginn has brought another element to the school with his music program. The students enjoy seeing Mr Lindsay on Fridays and are learning to play the ukulele.

Scaddan Primary School has been selected to participate in the inaugural Leading Cultures in Teaching Excellence program. We are acknowledged for our contribution to building a high-performance culture at our school. It is a 3 module program. We are looking forward to sharing this journey with our school community.

The annual P&C AGM was well attended. Congratulations to the following parents who were elected for positions.

Recent News Week 4, Term 1 2023

Men in Sheds

Thank you to Mrs Shiane Lea for organising Men in Sheds to construct our ECE cubby. This cubby will be enjoyed by our K/PP students and playgroup families. This new addition to the ECE space further enhances the learning environment and provides rich learning opportunities for our students.

School staff embed a continuous reflection and improvement cycle in Kindergarten to Year 2 and the cubby was purchased upon reflection. The National Quality Standard (NQS) sets a high national benchmark for early childhood education (K-Year 2) and includes 7 quality areas that are important outcomes for children.

The aim of Quality Area 3 under the National Quality Standard is to ensure that the physical environment is safe, suitable and provides a rich and diverse range of experiences that promote children’s learning and development.

The way that the environment is designed, equipped and organised determines the way that the space and resources are used and has the potential to maximise children’s engagement and level of positive experience and inclusive relationships.

PARENT AFTERNOON MEET AND GREET

On Wednesday 8 February, classroom teachers opened their doors to meet their students’ families. Providing a time for parents and carers to meet and hear from their child’s teacher is very important. The meeting provided an opportunity for classroom teachers to discuss daily and weekly routines, expectations, teaching and learning programs and school policy. Thank you to our families for attending and welcoming our new staff to Scaddan Primary School.

ZAP CIRCUS

Thank you to Tim Currie, Esperance Civic Centre Coordinator for organising and sponsoring a special event for the Scaddan Primary School community. Tarrabelle and Rusty, ZAP Circus, engaged the students in a fun workshop on Thursday 9 February and then brought the community together for a beautiful evening of entertainment. The families enjoyed an acoustic performance by a local artist, acrobatics, juggling, hula hooping and fire! Thank you to Mr Biggers and Mr Bouckaert for being good sports and joining in on the fun.

ON-ENTRY ASSESSMENT

Mrs Evans has been busy getting to know her students. She has begun testing the Pre-primary students using the On-entry assessment program. This assessment provides a valuable opportunity for Mrs Evans to get to know each child individually within the classroom environment, working one-on-one to observe strategies and behaviours that your child uses to answer questions.

The On-entry assessment module 1 is mandatory for Pre-primary students in Term 1. On-Entry is an assessment for learning and provides the classroom teacher with information about the skills and understandings that your child demonstrates at the commencement of the school year. It provides information that is used to plan and deliver intentional learning programs, reflective of each child’s need and capabilities.

On-entry assesses the literacy ad numeracy skills and understandings considered critical to early and ongoing educational development. The questions are directly linked to the Western Australian curriculum.

FLAGS

Have you noticed our new flagpoles?

Why are the 3 Flags of Australia?

There are three official flags in Australia. The 3 flags of Australia include the Australian National Flag, the Australian Aborginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag. The Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag were appointed flags of Australia in 1995, while a version of the Australian National Flag has been in use since 1901.

  • The Australian National Flag has a blue background and includes the British Union Jack in the upper left corner, a white Commonwealth star and a depiction of the Southern Cross constellation.
  • The Australian Aboriginal Flag has a black top half to symbolise Aboriginal people, a red lower half to represent the earth and the ceremonial significance of the colour ochre, and a central yellow sun.
  • The Torres Strait Islander Flag represents the land and sea with the colours green and blue, while its black lines represent the Torres Strait Islander people. The headdress, a dhari, symbolises the Torres Strait Islander people. The five-pointed star represents the five major island groups and is also a symbol of the seafaring culture in the Torres Straits. The colour white represents peace.

Attendance Matters

As a school, we are required to work towards improving the attendance of our students.

ATTENDANCE

Congratulations to the following students who have achieved 100% attendance so far this term:

Billie, Hunter and Pippa

Congratulations to the following students who have achieved at or above our school target of 93% attendance so far this term:

Ryder, Sailor and Layla.

At Scaddan Primary School, our goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to achieve their potential.

Scaddan Primary School will maintain consistently high levels of student attendance with a target of 93% or above. The Department of Education classifies any student below 90% as an attendance risk.

We know that everyday at school contributes to learning, which leads to better engagement and higher academic achievement. This sets students up for life and creates better social and economic outcomes for Western Australian families sand communities.

The School Education Act 1999 requires children of compulsory school age to attend school. When a child is unable to attend, legislation requires that Parents and Carers provide written notification providing a reasonable cause for the absence of the child.

We encourage you to notify the school of any absence via email or by replying to the school messaging system.

Child Health Nurse

A note from the School Health Nurse

Welcome to the new school year. My name is Sharlene and I am the School Health Nurse who visits your school.

School Health Nurses work in schools to promote healthy development and wellbeing so students may reach their full potential. A major part of my work is focused on early intervention and the School Entry Health Assessment program.  Additionally, the nurse can be contacted at any time throughout primary school if you have concerns about your child’s health, development or wellbeing.

School Health Nurses serve as a health contact point for children and their families, providing information, assessment, health counselling and referral. They also work in partnership with schools to support teachers in health related curriculum and can assist in the development of health care plans for students with complex and chronic health needs.

The services provided are free and confidential.

Communication

To ensure that communication is clear, timely and responsive to the needs of everyone we have the following in place:

All official communication is via the school email scaddan.ps@education.wa.edu.au. This email address is monitored daily and is received by the Manager Corporate Services, Mrs Tracey Berry.

In the event that the school needs to contact all families at the same time, a text message will be sent from the school MGMOutReach+ system or school mobile number 0427 756 055.

This system will also be used for emergencies and monitoring attendance. It is a legal requirement that the school is notified of any student absence.

The school newsletter will be sent out in Week 4 and Week 8 of each Term and will contain key information and outline term events. It will be emailed out and uploaded to the school website https://www.scaddanps.wa.edu.au

SeeSaw will be used by class teachers to share learning and important information and reminders for their class. Teachers may at times post messages and reminders of requirements for their classes during the day, however this is not to be used for ongoing communication throughout the day as teachers are unable to monitor this in a consistent manner.

Student diaries have been provided for your child. Please keep them in your child's bag. The diaries and student folders are checked every day by the classroom teacher. Parents/carers to write in any changes in travel arrangements for the day. This information is then written on the bus whiteboard on the verandah indicating who will pick up the child and at what time.

I can be contacted via email lynley.neill@education.wa.edu.au or school mobile 0427 756 055 or by phoning the school office on 90755100.

Updat-ed school app

Our school has implemented a phone app called Updat-ed that will make connecting with you so much more convenient.

To download the app just visit the App Store for iPhones or Google Play for Android’s. Search for Updat-ed and from the menu select our school. We’ll receive your registration request and will need to approve you before your app is up and running.

So what will the app do?

The app’s great for sending out alerts and reminders with one of its best features being the ability to save events directly into your phone’s calendar.

We hope you enjoy being Updat-ed.
